Record Excerpt

"Verso This Black woman gave herself the surname of ‘Ahmuty’, called the girl she sent to Grandmama ‘Maria Ahmuty’ & in one of her last letters written to speaks of the comfort her children are to her, working for her in her old age, she not then having the strength to work for herself. The black Maria was carefully sent back in Recto the ship in which her Mother had sent her to England & under the same Captain. I think Grandmama was one or two years, not longer, in the West Indies when her husband died & she returned with her two little girls, & one little son to live with her Mother Mrs Anderson in England. M.E.M. 1855"
