Summary

This record provides information on local consumption of coarse textiles in Southeast India.

Record Excerpt

Coarse cloth for local consumption was virtually produced everywhere and the cloth was sold weekly at fairs called santa. The North Indian equivalent being haats. Streynsham Master the governor of Fort St George in the 1680s refers to the sale of textiles at the local fair held every Wednesday at Vetapollam in Krishna district. Master says that people came from Masulipatam and elsewhere to the fair. One can presume that the weaving villages referred to by Master, like Bhimavaram and Vipparla, and the numerous weaving villages mentioned by Havert held similar fairs. [...] compared to the pletora of records which deal with the foreign, especially Company, trade in textiles, the sources for internal trade are very limitted.
