Today the term 'Creole' is used to describe a wide swath of hybridised Caribbean cultures, but in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries many Europeans used the term to describe the Caribbean-born children of white European colonists. Many such 'Creoles' raised in the Greater Caribbean region assimilated aspects of African Caribbean culture, including African Caribbean fashionable dress.
