In addition to loom-woven wrapped garments like lungis and saris, checked cloth in South India is also used to make tailored dress. The fabric on the left is a piece of cloth designed for making women's bodices or cholis. The fabric's checked field would be used to make the body of the choli, and the red side borders to finish the sleeves. Look at how it compares to the choli worn by the woman to the far right of this painting.

Observe: The choli or blouse worn by the woman on the far right is similar to the image of the checked choli yardage on the left.
